Building in a world that keeps changing the rules

A website essay

I built international companies assuming that ideas, talent and knowledge would keep moving more freely. That assumption now needs checking.

A business can serve customers globally while its data, capital, infrastructure and people face increasingly local restrictions. Political risk has become an operating question. Where does the system run? Who controls it? What changes if a government changes its mind?

Complete independence is unrealistic. The practical goal is to understand dependencies and retain the ability to change them. That means portable systems, useful standards and suppliers you can replace.

AI makes the question of control more urgent. When software can spend money, change infrastructure or act for a customer, speed alone is a poor measure of progress. We need to know who authorised an action, what limits applied and what evidence remains.

Some friction protects the person who carries the consequences. Removing it without understanding its purpose is careless engineering.

I still believe good ideas should travel. Keeping that possible requires deliberate work.
